Student Science Video Contest

The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) is excited to present our annual Student Science Video Contest. Enter the competition by March 20 for a chance to win a $2000 prize and have your video presented at a major science conference!

ARVO’s Annual Meeting brings together vision scientists from all over the world to discuss the latest innovations in the field. The 2022 meeting will take place in Denver, Colorado — so we’re calling on students from select high schools in Denver and surrounding counties to submit a video that showcases their interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

To learn more about the contest and how to enter, watch the video tutorial or jump to "Categories" below.

Categories

Submit a video in one of the following categories. Each video category has a list of prompts to get you thinking about what you'll include in your video. These are just ideas to spark inspiration — feel free to be creative!

My first or favorite experiment

  • Who or what inspired you to conduct your experiment? What was your hypothesis?
  • What did you learn? How will you apply your findings to future experiments — or use them in your future career?
  • What advice do you have for other students preparing to conduct their first experiment? Did you get helpful tips from someone that you’d want others to know?

My live science demonstration

  • What inspired you to conduct this experiment or demonstration?
  • How will you use the scientific method to solve a problem?
  • What did you learn? How will you apply your findings to future experiments — or use them in your future career?
  • Check out an example! Watch Tre’s video about the magnus effect below.

What an animal taught me

  • What scientific observations have you made?
  • What do the animal and humans have in common?
  • How will you apply what you learned to future scientific study?

What my science teacher taught me

  • What science topics have you enjoyed learning about in school and why?
  • How did your teacher capture your interest in this topic?
  • What else has your teacher inspired you to study?

How my favorite scientist made a difference

  • Who's your favorite scientist and what are they known for?
  • What was their journey to scientific discovery? What obstacles did they face?
  • How do we use their findings today?

Since ARVO is a membership organization supporting eye and vision scientists from across the globe, you’ll get extra points if your video is about eyes and vision science. But that’s not required! We look forward to reviewing videos on any science topic.

Guidelines

Logistics

  • Submissions open on Feb. 1 and close on March 20
  • Videos must be 3 minutes or less
  • You can submit your video individually or as a group
  • To enter the contest, you will have to fill out our submission form then upload your video there. The form will be available on this webpage on Feb. 1.

  • Don’t include copyrighted music or images in your video unless you have written permission from the copyright owner

Scoring
ARVO will review all video submissions to ensure they follow contest guidelines.

ARVO representatives will review and score all videos and then share the highest-scoring videos. Then your friends and family will vote for their favorite!

ARVO representatives will score each video using the following rubric:

  • Up to 50 points for scientific content — successful videos will have a clear research question or scientific concept
  • Up to 50 points for creativity — successful videos will be engaging, unique, and get voters excited about the topic
  • Up to 10 bonus points for vision-related videos — this isn’t a requirement, but ARVO will give extra points to videos on eyes or vision science

Awards
ARVO will select 3 winners:

  • Grand prize — $2000
  • Second place — $1000
  • Third place — $500

ARVO will showcase the grand prize video at its Annual Meeting on May 1 - 4, 2022.
