Kreissig Award for Excellence in Retinal Surgery
This award, established by Ingrid Kreissig, MD in 2020 with an endowment through the ARVO Foundation, recognizes the next generation of curious, enterprising investigators who seek to optimize functional outcomes for patients needing retinal surgery.
The recipient will receive a $30,000 honorarium. The first applications will be accepted July – September 2021.
The purpose of the award is to recognize investigators who have expanded or enhanced scientific knowledge related to the understanding of:
a) The rationale and mechanisms for a minimal approach in retinal surgery
b) An innovative surgical approach to retinal disease
c) The functional results after the newly developed retinal surgery
Award qualifications
- Year 1 (2021): The inaugural award will be given to a deserving recipient who has developed clinical insights into the long-term (greater than two years) surgical and functional outcomes after retinal detachment repair.
- Year 2 and onward (2022+): Subsequent awards will have a broader focus, recognizing excellence in the understanding of the mechanisms of retinal disease requiring surgical management, innovative approaches to management, and/or outcomes of surgical treatment.

2021 Recipient: Rajeev H. Muni MD, MSc, FRCSC
Dr. Rajeev Muni is a staff vitreoretinal surgeon at St. Michael's Hospital, The Hospital for Sick Children and the Kensington Eye Institute in Toronto, Canada and is Vice-Chair of Clinical Research in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, University of Toronto. Dr. Muni leads an active clinical research program and has a keen interest in randomized clinical trials in vitreoretinal conditions. Dr. Muni and his team conducted the PIVOT trial comparing pneumatic retinopexy versus pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair. He has also been instrumental in novel research assessing the integrity of retinal reattachment with various surgical approaches using multimodal imaging and has published extensively on this topic in high-impact journals.
