2022 Joanne G. Angle Award recipient:
Linda Hazlett, PhD, FARVO

Linda Hazlett, PhD, FARVO, has been named the 2022 recipient of the Joanne G. Angle Award — the highest service honor bestowed by ARVO. The award recognizes an outstanding leader who has made significant and continuous contributions in support of the Association’s mission.

 

“Receiving this award is very meaningful as I knew Joanne Angle for a very long time and worked with her and others on projects, such as initiating Women in Eye and Vision Research (WEAVR) years ago. She was the heart and soul of ARVO and so this is very special to me.”

 

Hazlett shares that she started volunteering with ARVO because of her interest in the work of the Annual Meeting Program Committee, on which she served from 1997 - 2000 representing the Immunology/ Microbiology (IM) Section. This turned out to be the catalyst that led to her contributing to a number of committees over the years, including the Diversity Initiatives Committee (1992 – 1994), Publications Committee, Advocacy and Outreach Committee and the ARVO Foundation Awards Committee (2016 – 2019). Hazlett has also served as a member of the editorial board for the ARVO journal, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science (IOVS), since 2012. 

 

“I think it is just finding something that interests you, doing it, and then one thing leads to another. We all have a talent to offer and share; it is just realizing that and stepping up.”

 

Many in the eye and vision community have benefited from Hazlett’s talents, including her organization of symposia for Annual Meetings and committee service with ARVO partner, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research/Alliance for Eye and Vision Research. Activities which she counts among the highlights of her volunteer life.

 

Drawing from her experiences over her over 40-year membership with ARVO, Hazlett advises other members interested in volunteering to, “Do it! It will give you back so much more than you give.”

About Linda Hazlett, PhD, FARVO

Linda Hazlett is vice dean for Research and Graduate Programs at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. She is also the Robert S. Jampel endowed chair in Ophthalmology and distinguished professor and vice chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences. In addition, she holds the Knopper family endowed research fund. A widely published researcher, Hazlett’s major research interests are ocular infection and pathogenesis, inflammation, and innate immunity. She has authored 200 peer reviewed papers, 22 book chapters and holds two provisional patents for treatment of bacterial keratitis. Hazlett has successfully secured additional funding for one of Wayne State University’s longest-running grants related to vision research ― the P30 Core Vision Center from the National Eye Institute of the NIH ― which keeps the grant in effect at the university for 36 years.
